Job Description

Stock Accountant x 2

Location - Northampton

Division - Plumbing & Heating

Grade - C6

An excellent opportunity has become available to join the Plumbing & Heating division as a Stock Accountant based in Northampton.

It’s an exciting time to be joining the division as we embark on a transformation journey to create a stronger, efficient and more profitable business. Our strategy focuses on nurturing what already makes us great, while building plans to differentiate our customer offer and continuing to develop expertise, range and delivering a great service to make it easier for customers to do business with us. We want to continue to build a strong culture of winning where customers love to shop and where our people love to work.

Joining us as a Stock Accountant means playing an integral role as part of the Management Accounts team as well as taking full ownership of Stock Accounting. You’ll need to have a high level of problem solving and investigation work in order to understand what causes gross margin variances as a result of system stock not equating to physical stock. You’ll also receive a breadth of exposure as there will be regular interaction branch staff, regional stock managers and other Finance teams.

Your key accountabilities include:

  • Posting of stock balances to the General Ledger (at both gross and net stock level) in line with company policy and appropriate accounting standards

  • Evaluation of stock provision requirements to cover both obsolescence and excess stock holding vs. sales demand

  • Understand and reflect stock adjustments in the accounts for changes in supplier cost/branch buying behaviours (buying and inflation gains)

  • Calculation of gross profit margin variances for c. 40 branches per month and investigation of results

  • Reflect appropriate adjustments to closing stock balances, for example, to take account of any stock invoices that may be delayed/in dispute

  • Work closely with branch managers, regional stock controllers and other Finance teams in order to understand and articulate causes of gross margin variance arising at the point of stock take

  • Work with data management teams to identify and correct any product set up errors that may be giving incorrect stock valuations (e.g. products set up with an incorrect unit of measure)

  • Reconciliation of stock ledger to general ledger

  • Completion of monthly financial submissions to provide analysis of stock movements and closing balances

  • Work with both internal and external auditors on understanding stock accounting processes and validation of balances

  • Support branches and Operations and Commercial Finance teams with stock related queries

What we’re looking for

You’ll need to have some experience as part of a Management Accounts/Financial Accounts department and will ideally be studying towards an accountancy qualification. You’ll have excellent communication skills, and be able to explain complex financial processes to non-financial stakeholders. We’re looking for someone who is ambitious and keen to learn - if you think you’re up for the challenge, then we would like to hear from you.

What we can offer you?

A busy and fast paced business with great benefits, and plenty of opportunities for career progression - join Travis Perkins Plumbing & Heating division as a Stock Accountant based in Northampton and share our success and good times with a hard-working, friendly bunch of people.
