Our Travis Perkins Plumbing & Heating Division are currently recruiting for a Software Engineer to join us at our site in Northampton.

It’s an exciting time to be joining the division as we embark on a transformation journey to create a stronger, efficient and more profitable business. Our strategy focuses on nurturing what already makes us great, while building plans to differentiate our customer offer and continuing to develop expertise, range and delivering a great service to make it easier for customers to do business with us. We want to continue to build a strong culture of winning where customers love to shop and where our people love to work.

As a Plumbing & Heating division Software Engineer, you will be working within a truly decentralised agile environment that’s often described as a hive of activity. Using a range of skills and technical tools, you will be working in a tight-knit team.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Designing software, supported by the Architects with software quality and design patterns

  • Implementing quality software, providing solutions with highly maintainable code and automated tests with our inhouse unit testing framework

  • User story driven development – working with business facing colleagues to obtain requirements, ensuring that stories meet acceptance criteria and deliver value at the earliest possible opportunity

  • Continuous improvement - Acting on the scrum metrics and retrospective feedback to maintain and continuously improve the performance of the team

  • Mentoring more junior members of the team, helping build their skills and confidence

  • Working as a Subject Matter Expert during the Software Development Lifecycle

  • Actively participating in Scrum Ceremonies

  • Ensuring that communication to stakeholders is clear

What Are We Looking For?

  • 2+ years of software development experience

  • Universe, Unidata, Reality, OpenInsight, Jbase or Pick(D3)  Databasic

  • Procedural structured programming  experience

  • Experience of analysis and design

Beneficial but not essential

  • Agile, Scrum, iterative software development experience

  • Spring MVC, Git, Junit, REST / JSON Web Services

  • Java, J2EE, C#.NET, MongoDB, Talend or MySQL experience

  • TDD, BDD experience

  • Experience in Object Oriented Programming / Design (OOP/OOD)

  • Experience working in a continuous integration/delivery environment

  • Experience working within a large company and team, preferably in the retail or merchant sector

You will be joining a team that is serving the Plumbing & Heating division and working on a variety of business transformation projects. Your core area of responsibility will be the development of our UniVerse estate but in our integrated world there are many touch points with other technologies and the potential to develop in these areas. We are a small team and so the candidate must be willing to get involved in the full system lifecycle and learn new technology where appropriate.  Overall an interesting and varied role.

We're Agile, we're Lean, we've gone Google and we're providing in-house designed & built bespoke software and applications to support our business. We have grand plans to increase the size of our business further and are forward thinking enough to recognise that investment in IT will give us the leading edge on our competitors. We've restructured, we've adopted new methodologies, and we've brought in award winning IT professionals to take us through this transformation.
